For the game Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, artists wanted to recreate a real-life event from Hong Kong Island
It is called "Symphony of Lights", a nightly light show where the city skyline lights up
On my side, I worked on the facade neon / LED effect
I used it as an opportunity to create a procedural animated neon effect, with moving light patterns that feel dynamic and organic
It creates the impression of illuminated bands flowing across a surface, while subtle variations keep the result from feeling flat or repetitive
The effect is driven by a layered system based on a few small textures, giving artists a large range of possible variations
A global rhythm controls how fast the overall pattern moves, while additional localized variations shift the timing and placement of the light so different parts of the surface do not behave exactly the same
The shader can also be world-position based to create more interesting patterns, with different daytime fade techniques controlling how the neons appear or disappear
